As expectations around sustainability, transparency, and responsible sourcing continue to rise—driven by regulatory changes, procurement policy shifts, and growing customer scrutiny—businesses are seeking credible ways to demonstrate they’re doing the right thing. And increasingly, they’re being held accountable for the claims they make. 

The Australian government has launched their Environmentally Sustainable Procurement Policy (ESP Policy) for furniture, fittings & equipment, ICT products and textiles. To ensure the procurement of products that meet core sustainability priorities, the cites robust ecolabels including, GECA and TCO Certified and requires industry to report how they are meeting those requirements.

Fit for Office (FFO), the national stewardship approach to address and divert commercial furniture from landfill that GECA, Edge Environment and the Global Product Stewardship Council are developing for Australia, is entering a critical development phase. Discover how you can get involved!

On 15 March 2021, in collaboration with Edge Environment and the Global Product Stewardship Council, GECA was awarded a grant by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment to tackle the issue of commercial office furniture going to landfill. The group will use the funding to design a product stewardship scheme that will help reduce the estimated 30,000 tonnes of furniture – much of it in perfectly good condition – that ends up in Australia’s waste stream each year.
