Our Governance

Board of Directors

The GECA board, elected by our members to serve three-year terms, provides strategic direction and guidance for the organisation while supporting our CEO in daily operations. This governance model ensures transparency, accountability, and strong leadership — helping GECA stay focused on driving positive environmental and social outcomes for people and planet.

Independent appointment panel

The Independent Appointment Panel (IAP) is a subcommittee of the GECA Board responsible for appointing and overseeing our Assurance Providers. This governance function ensures the continued integrity, independence, and impact of GECA's certification scheme — a key factor in our global leadership.

The IAP's roles and responsibilities are outlined in its Terms of Reference. These include the appointment, monitoring, and reappointment of Assurance Providers, with input from relevant stakeholders involved in GECA certification.

GECA's rigorous lifecycle ecolabel follows ISO 14024 principles, which require an independent third-party assessment. Our Assurance Providers are selected through a transparent and robust process. They must comply with the GECA Certification Scheme Rules and the ISO/IEC 17065 international standard for certifying bodies.

Each provider undergoes a comprehensive review by the IAP to ensure the highest standards of professionalism and credibility. Their expert Assessors guide manufacturers through the certification process — helping them meet best practice benchmarks and achieve meaningful sustainability outcomes.

Standards CommiTtee

GECA's transparent and comprehensive standard development process is highly collaborative, including a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) comprising stakeholders and industry experts relevant to the product or service category.

Once a new or revised GECA standard has been developed and reviewed by a TAG, it is submitted to our Standards Committee for independent review. Committee members provide expert oversight and recommendations to ensure each standard remains effective, credible, and aligned with ISO 14024 principles for global best practice in lifecycle ecolabelling.

We sincerely thank our current Standards Committee members — Libby Staggs, Dr Maria Burwood, Rob Coombs, and Stephen Reardon — for their invaluable contributions to the rigour and impact of GECA's standards.
