  • A better standard for textiles and leather: have your say

    22 Jan 2014 10:58 am

Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) has released its new environmental standard for textiles and leather for public comment.

Products that could be certified under the standard include textiles for use in clothing, furniture, bedding, decorative applications and fittings sold in the Australian market.

The standard also allows for certification of finished products including clothing and accessories consisting of at least 90 per cent by weight of textile fibres, interiors items consisting of at least 90 per cent by weight of textile fibres, yarn and fabric, cleaning products: woven or non-woven fabric products intended for cleaning and drying, and hide and leather products consisting of at least 90 per cent by weight of leather/hide.

When GECA released its revised draft textiles standard (2012), which was developed in conjunction with Environmental Choice New Zealand (ECNZ), it received comments on many criteria. GECA has addressed these comments and has also aligned its standard with the EU Ecolabel criteria for textiles, where possible.

GECA is keen to receive feedback from industry professionals and members of the public interested in sustainable textiles until 14 February, 2014. More information and a PDF version of the draft standard are available here.
